Online handwriting lessons
Tailored lessons with myself, you and your child. Taking place at your home at a time of your choosing.
Attention parents: Give me 6 online lessons and I will take your child from having unreadable handwriting to a confident, legible writer.
Does your child’s handwriting feel sloppy and inconsistent? Are you wondering where to begin as you are not sure what you can do or should do.
Do you feel your son or daughter has the best ideas for their work but can just never get it down on paper? This leaves you feeling frustrated and you do not know how to help without it erupting into a shouting match!
The dreaded pen licence. . . has your child still have not got theirs? Despite you feeling they are capable of beautiful writing. Their school is telling you it is because their writing is not consistent enough. You just want to know how to help them not be the last in the class to get one.
Do they tire so easily due to hypermobile joints and they’re now falling below expected levels? If only there was an easy answer.
This year have you seen new level of scruffy presentation? Even the teachers say that the content is there, it’s just deciphering it is the problem. This makes you very anxious about how your child will manage in their exams.
Are you looking for a handwriting specialist that can give both you and your child solutions? Helping them achieve their handwriting goals whether that be legible writing, pen licences or passing exams.

Hi, I'm Sheilagh
BUT why learn from me?
- I’m a children’s occupational therapist with a passion and a slight fascination about all things to do with handwriting.
- I want to make it easy for EVERYONE.
- I don’t believe handwriting should be boring or repetitive.
- I know that teaching one approach to the many is not right for everyone.
- Every child is different and so are my teaching methods.
- Over the last 20 years I’ve helped many, many children.
- I’ve written two books on handwriting. One is a best seller. (‘The Early Handwriting Toolkit’)
- Oh and I’ve never met any child who I have not been able to transform their writing.

Online handwriting lessons are ideal for parents who wish step-by-step guidance over a number of weeks to help improve their child's handwriting.
Having a handwriting lesson via Skype is something that many parents do not automatically associate as being possible when teaching handwriting. Yet this is actually a brilliant solution.
Skype is an online video chatting service. Giving us a chance to see and hear each other. The ‘share screen’ facility helps us to go through your child’s work as if we are sitting next to each other. There is no weird time delay between who can speak next. The sound and the picture quality is excellent.
The only three things we need are:
- You & your child.
- A device such as a mobile phone/tablet/laptop to operate the Skype app through.
- An internet connection.
It is all very easy to use.
All that is needed is for you to register for an account which is free. We do not have to worry about whether your device runs on an android or Apple system. When Skyping each other, this tool is free to use.
Similar to any form of 1:1 teaching it is helpful to have our lessons in a room that is quiet and free from distractions. There are times that I will ask your child to do some handwriting and to show me what they have written. For this reason it is best to choose a room with a table. It can be in the kitchen, living room or a dining room.
Sometimes two of the biggest concerns parents have is will it work and will my child like this approach?
The quick answer is YES and YES.
Working online is no different to having myself sat next to your child in your home. The instruction and level of learning is the same. What is also a great game changer for the children is the technological aspect. Children are used to using different forms of technology throughout their school day.
Having an online handwriting lesson on Skype keeps them engaged and motivated.
Look at what can be achieved by having online handwriting lessons
Skype tuition provides a tailored experience for you and your child.
Your little one might be struggling with letter legibility, size, formation or another common handwriting challenge.
I’m sure you want to see a significant improvement, in the shortest possible time.
Perhaps you’ve even tried additional support at school, with little to no noticeable effect. The result? Your child has become disillusioned with writing. Worse still, their confidence may even have taken a hit, and their school work may have nosedived. I have many different techniques that can make a real difference to handwriting.
My online handwriting lessons are designed for what your child needs to learn. Over the course of six, eight or ten lessons working with me, your child can improve any aspect of their handwriting. As for you – Mum, Dad – I’m here for you too. I’ll answer your questions and advise as to how you can best help your child. Often parents email me in-between sessions for further advice and I am always happy to help.
Family life is hectic (I completely understand) – so I work around you. Let me know what time suits you and we’ll go from there. In between our lessons, I’ll provide your child with handwriting tasks (homework) that will secure their biggest improvements.
Skype tuition is a step-by-step approach over a number of weeks designed to help improve their child's handwriting.
You will receive expert guidance once a fortnight and in between these times, you will have all the tools to help become your child’s handwriting teacher at home.
As this is an online service there are no geographical limitations. I work with fabulous families across the whole of the UK and beyond.
To help me ‘see’ your child complete their handwriting homework. You will be asked to film them writing and this can easily be done on a mobile phone. Do not worry I will guide you on what I need to see, how to record it and how to send it back to me before the next session. I do ask everything is sent back to me with 48 hours notice as this gives me a chance to analyse your child’s work.
If you can film on your phone, send a message by phone or email and are ready to help your child then we are ready to get started.
So, what is included?
A series of 6 x fortnightly Skype sessions meaning that you are fully supported whilst your child improves their handwriting without the need to leave your home.
Every session is for 45 minutes giving you time to digest and ask questions. This helps you become the handwriting tutor in your own home.
You will be asked to film your child writing for 5 minutes. This helps me analyse their handwriting and their progress.
In their words
Child rating scale of handwriting, using the pictorial ‘Here’s how I write’ self-assessment. This will discover how your child feels about their writing.
Discuss the ‘homework’ produced and set new fortnightly handwriting goals. Your child is asked to be there at the beginning and at the end of the Skype calls.
In between the sessions your child will be given ‘homework’ specific to their goals. The homework are worksheets created by myself and have been nominated for awards.
A summary report reviewing your child’s progress is given at the end of the sessions. This can be forwarded to your school.
An extra bonus that does not always happen is that you may see my cat called ‘Jet’ appear in the background, as he likes to see what is going on!
Frequently asked questions:
Skype is a video chat service. Meaning we can all talk and see each other as if I am sitting in a room with you.
Occasionally I may ask that the screen is lowered. This helps me see how your child’s hand moves when writing. After all writing exercises I review their work. Your child shows me their work by holding it up to the video video camera. Throughout the lesson I will be giving instructions on how they can improve their handwriting.
At the end of the lesson we talk together on their progress. And I will set homework to help them to practice what I have just taught them.
This I totally understand. Agreeing that help might be needed is never easy. Agreeing to a stranger helping is even harder.
Please assure them I am not here to embarrass them. I may not have seen their handwriting before. But I bet it is not the worst I have ever seen. Even if it is, so what? I can a guarantee you that I will know a way to help them. They may even find working with me is fun. Or as a teenager would say… “it’s not so bad”.
Yes. In fact most of the people I see in my Skype service are teenagers.
They often have difficulties with legibility. Or are unable to write fast. Some have been told by their teachers that their writing has to improve if they want to pass their exams. Others have parents who have foreseen a potential difficulty. These Mums and/or Dads want to get help now before it affects their child’s grades or confidence.
No not at all. I have worked with people from America, South Africa, Majorca and Ireland.
The handwriting style may be different. However the fundamentals of teaching handwriting step by step. Using a developmental approach. Do not change.
This fluctuates but usually your child can be seen in less than 2 weeks. I offer handwriting lessons every day except Wednesdays and Sundays. At the time of paying you will receive an email from myself giving you a link to my online diary. Using this link you can book the lessons.
Each lesson costs £45. They are bought in blocks of 6, 8 or 10 lessons.
Payment is made via Paypal prior to any appointment being made.
If you are paying in another currency Paypal will convert the sum into pounds.
Payment is either in full or by a monthly payment option. You can decide which one you want at the time of paying.
Each lesson lasts for 45 minutes. Any longer and I have found the children become tired. This means they are not ready to learn new information.
Every lesson is different. They are based on your child’s needs. It will usually involve writing exercises. Instruction by myself on how to improve what has been written. And the odd game to make it more fun. I may also give homework depending on how well your child is doing.
Yes please. It is helpful to have someone angle the video camera so that I can see what they are writing. You will also learn how you can help your child in-between our lessons.

My one piece of advice to you would be please act. Do something to help improve your child’s handwriting. You found my website for a reason. There are many different ways I can help.
Skype sessions work remarkably well. By working together I have helped make loads of children’s writing legible. Often this is by working on letter formation, size and word spacing.
Handwriting difficulties do not go away. The amazing thing about these Skype lessons are how a child who starts off lacking in confidence very quickly blossoms. They transform into confident writers. Ones who can see the changes in their own writing. And know how to make improvements even when I am not there.
