1 to 1 handwriting tuition

Tailored handwriting lessons

Using the latest research in a fun and practical way. Taking place online.

Attention parents: Give me 6 lessons and I will take your child from not knowing how to write clearly to one who enjoys writing their thoughts and ideas down.

These handwriting lessons give your child the individual support they need to excel at handwriting.

Does your child feel that ‘fixing’ their handwriting is something that is impossible?  Furthermore, hearing this breaks your heart as you do not know what to do. And you are feeling at your wits end.

Do you fear people will be judging your son or daughter if as an adult they have handwriting of a child?  Writing which is messy and unreadable.

Has their writing always been bad but now it is getting worse, it is practically illegible. Are the school raising this as an issue? As a result, you have been trying to talk to your child about it and now they are getting very upset.

Is their handwriting messy because they can’t see the pencil tip? In addition, they might also be saying they are becoming tired when writing.

Has your child’s school said he/she ‘will get there’? Yet you are still waiting. Finally you think it is time to take some action yourself as watching them struggle on is no longer an option.

Are you looking for a someone who can build your child’s confidence when writing? Who can also show them how to write without them being put off? Helping them achieve the handwriting clarity that you desperately know that they can do.

Then this 1 to 1 handwriting tuition is the answer for your child. Contact me to find out more.

This is what the kids say...

Kids handwriting testimonial 1 to 1 work
And this is what the parents say...
Sheilagh had her work cut out for her with my son, but by the end of our 1:1 sessions my son had established a preferred hand dominance, changed to a tripod grip, increased his visual skills and changed his handwriting style. As a result of this my son, the school and myself have been able to read his work for the first time in 4 years. I can’t recommend Sheilagh enough as she has helped my son achieve so much in a short amount of time.
Kirsten S.,Mum of a great boy who always laughed and smiled even when things were tough to learn.
My son broke my heart when he told me he didn’t want to do a job that meant he’d have to write when he left school. He explained that he was embarrassed by his poor handwriting. Sheilagh was quick to pick up what style of pen nib suited my sons writing, straight away he felt more comfortable with the pen grip. She took my son through different ways of writing. He became more confident in his ability to write and could see the improvements he was making. He now not only is happy with writing at school but writes much more freely with longer stories, essays etc. I can’t thank Sheilagh enough for the support given, truly has been fantastic in giving my son confidence and improved his writing immensely. Thank you.
Pete S.,Dad of an amazing 15 year old who knew he wanted to improve his handwriting.
Sheilagh is amazing. We were struggling to help our 7 year old son to write. He didn't have the confidence or skill to want to write. He was very reluctant to write a birthday card. We searched for help and saw Sheilagh's website. She came round and put us at ease and more importantly made my son feel comfortable and look forward to his lessons. Sheilagh planned lessons and they were tailored to his needs and likes. Even when he wasn't impressed with a lesson she would adapt and find a way for him to co-operate. He enjoyed his lessons and he now has the confidence to write. We wouldn't be at this point without Sheilagh's help and so glad we didn't wait too long to ask for help. He happily writes cards now and when tasked with writing he doesn't hesitate. Thank you soo much Sheilagh.
Kelly E., Mum of a fabulous boy who initially found handwriting very tricky to do.

Hi, I'm Sheilagh

BUT why learn from me?

  • I’m a children’s occupational therapist with a passion and a slight fascination about all things to do with handwriting.
  • I want to make it easy for EVERYONE.
  • I don’t believe handwriting should be boring or repetitive.

What happens?

All 1:1 handwriting lessons happen online. Every handwriting lesson will last for 45 minutes. The frequency is decided by you. As Mum or Dad you’ll know what is best for your child. To assist your decision, weekly sessions act as a great kick-starter to handwriting success.

This tuition is sold in lesson blocks. Occupational therapy research suggests handwriting lessons need to be anywhere from 6 to 20 sessions for changes to be made. My block of handwriting lessons are sold in 6’s. The overall number is down to yourself to decide. Some kids do well with 6 lessons and some need more. Please do contact me first if uncertain.

Frequently asked questions:

What is your availability?

This fluctuates but usually your child can be seen in less than 2 weeks. I offer handwriting lessons every day except Fridays and Sundays. At the time of paying you will receive an email from myself giving you a link to my online diary. Using this link you can book the lessons.

How much does it cost?

Each lesson costs £60. They are bought in blocks of 6 lessons.

How do I pay?

Payment is made via Paypal prior to any appointment being made.

If you need me to raise an invoice because you do not have a Paypal account contact me here.

Payment is either in full or by a monthly payment option. You can decide which one you want at the time of paying.

How long do the lessons last for?

Each lesson lasts for 45 minutes. Any longer and I have found the children become tired. This means they are not ready to learn new information.

What happens in a lesson?

Every lesson is different. They are based on your child’s needs. It will usually involve playing some games to develop fine motor skills. Writing on worksheets that I provide. Instruction by myself on how to improve what has been written. I may also give homework depending on how well your child is doing.

Should I be there?

Yes, please be in the house. I am DBS checked but I would not feel comfortable seeing your child alone. Most parents tend to sit in next to their child. After every lesson I will give you individual feedback on how they have been doing. I will also show you the work they have completed with me.

This is for you if:

This is not for you if`:

  • you have a child who has a handwriting difficulty.
  • your child benefits being truly individually and not part of a group.
  • your child likes a combination of games and handwriting.
  • you are ready to seek extra help beyond asking your child's school.
  • you have the time to attend the lessons with your child.
  • you have time to supervise that all homework has been completed.
  • your child has a full action packed diary of events. And by doing this you will be squeezing handwriting in as an extra activity. Thus adding pressure to their busy lives.
  • your child cannot take part in a lesson lasting 45 minutes (even with frequent activity changes).

A few more words from parents

Sheilagh you have really helped my son and his class teachers. They have taken onboard your advice and Ralph is really working hard on maintain his pencil grip. Your sessions were very child friendly and imaginative, Ralph enjoyed the 1-1 attention and this approach was certainly the best method for him. We have really appreciated your help and I feel much more confident in being able to support Ralph with his handwriting. Thank you very much.
Kim E.,Mum of a lovely boy who gave everything he tried 110%. Worthing, West Sussex, UK.
Hi Sheilagh, I just wanted to thank you for boosting Frasers confidence and writing when he was in Year 3. Today he got his GCSE results and got a staggeringly amazing 10 A* with A**(9) in Maths and English. He was so anti school and struggling until your intervention when it all turned around for him. Thank you
Claire B.,Mum of a fabulous boy who near the point of giving up on handwriting, Hampshire UK.

P.S. Not sure what to do?

I totally understand that and I am happy to help. If you would rather speak to me first before booking. You can can either ping me an email. Or you can call me on 01243 252310.

My one piece of advice to you would be please act. Do something to help improve your child’s handwriting. You found my website for a reason. There are many different ways I can help.

By working together I have been able to show kids how to correctly form letters. How to join letters. How to make their work legible for an examiner to read it. And I’ve also been their “secret weapon”, to fast track their handwriting progress at school.

Handwriting difficulties do not go away. They zap the confidence and energy from children. A child very rarely “grows out of it”.
